Rex W. Thompson

Rex W. Thompson, Professor of Finance and retired James M. Collins Chair in the Cox School of Business, joined the SMU faculty in 1988. He served as chair of the Finance, Insurance and Real Estate Department in 1991-1998, and as director of the Center for the Study of Financial Institutions and Markets in 1993-1995. He served as associate dean for Academic Affairs in 1995-1996. He earned a B.A. degree, with distinction, at the University of Washington, and M.B.A. (first in class) and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Rochester. Professor Thompson's research focuses on capital market theory and evidence, corporate finance, and empirical methodology in finance and accounting. Prior to SMU, he taught at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, the University of British Columbia, Carnegie-Mellon University, and the University of Washington. More than 30 of his peer-reviewed articles have been published in academic journals, and he's presented to more than 50 university and association audiences. He retires as Professor Emeritus of Finance.
